Missouri lawmakers are reviewing legislation aimed at safeguarding jobs and ensuring farmers in the state can continue producing affordable, high-quality food. The Senate Agriculture Committee recently considered SB 14, a bill introduced by Senator Justin Brown (R-Rolla). This proposed legislation stipulates that any pesticide registered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and compliant with federal labeling standards will meet health and safety warning requirements.
Bayer, a significant supporter of the bill, employs thousands of Missourians, particularly in the St. Louis region. The company is the sole domestic producer of glyphosate, a widely used weed control product globally. Over recent years, glyphosate manufacturers have faced challenges from lawsuits and regulatory obstacles initiated by out-of-state groups and trial attorneys.
Dr. Liza Lockwood, medical affairs lead at Bayer, commented on the situation: “Money invested in litigation costs could otherwise be invested into research and development, bringing new tools and innovations to farmers.” She added that legislative certainty is crucial for the industry's future: “It’s becoming more and more untenable to see a path forward without some sort of legislative certainty. The industry needs your help, and we need your help to protect a safe, effective and invaluable tool for farmers.”
Luke Reed from the Missouri Chamber expressed support for SB 14 during his testimony before the committee. He emphasized that it would provide consistency for manufacturers dealing with varying regulations nationwide.
In parallel with SB 14 in the Senate, Representative Dane Diehl (R-Butler) is promoting a companion bill known as HB 544 in the House.
