As the inauguration of President Donald Trump approaches, discussions have emerged about potential policy changes. U.S. Senator Josh Hawley has called for the restoration of pro-life policies previously implemented by Trump's Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). According to Hawley, these measures are crucial for protecting unborn children in America.
Senator Hawley emphasized the significant impact of agency actions on government policy, stating that "these rules set the direction of policy for the whole of the government." He highlighted the power of federal agencies to influence state policies through grant programs and other means.
During Trump's first term, HHS introduced several pro-life initiatives. These included restricting federal funding for abortion providers under the Title X grant program and making pregnancy resource centers eligible for federal funding. Additionally, Trump reinstated the Mexico City Policy, which blocked federal funding to international aid groups promoting abortions.
Hawley criticized President Joe Biden's administration for attempting to reverse these policies. He claimed that Biden's HHS sought to "force federal grant recipients to make referrals for abortions" and cut off funding for pregnancy resource centers.
As Trump prepares to take office again, Hawley urged him to use his presidential powers to protect unborn children. "President Trump has the power to start protecting life again—immediately," he stated.
