Quinn Riordan, a senior at Saint Louis University in Madrid, is completing her undergraduate studies in international studies. Originally from the suburbs of Chicago, she has spent her entire college career overseas. During her time in Madrid, she has developed strong relationships with classmates from various countries and engaged in community service.
Reflecting on her decision to study abroad, Riordan stated, "SLU-Madrid seemed like such an amazing opportunity to explore the world and move somewhere completely outside of my comfort zone." She acknowledged the challenges of being away from family but emphasized the supportive community formed among students. "I've met so many cool people," she said, adding that SLU-Madrid attracts individuals who are independent and adventurous.
Riordan initially pursued political science but switched to international studies to incorporate environmental science courses into her education. "I want to do something in environmental policy and it’s important to know the science behind it," she explained. Her interest in environmental issues stems partly from her mother’s background in marine biology and her own involvement in climate activism during high school.
Her academic pursuits included studying oceanography and sustainable development for Latin America. A project on marine reserves allowed her to connect concepts from different classes, highlighting their ecological and economic benefits.
In addition to her studies, Riordan teaches English to students ranging from primary school age to early high school. She described this experience as rewarding, noting that many of her students come from immigrant families.
Looking ahead, Riordan is applying for master's programs focused on global security studies with an emphasis on energy and environmental security. While considering various options within environmental policy, she remains uncertain about pursuing government work.
