The Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry is urging residents to vote against Proposition A, a ballot measure that proposes new mandates on businesses. The proposition aims to raise the state's minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2026, significantly higher than the current federal minimum wage of $7.25. Missouri's minimum wage has exceeded the federal rate since 2013.

"Ultimately, increased labor costs are passed down to consumers. As many U.S. families struggle with the effects of inflation, Proposition A will further increase the costs of goods and services here in Missouri," said Kara Corches, interim president and CEO of the Missouri Chamber. "Nearly half of all minimum wage earners are teenagers or young adults, and raising the minimum wage can push them out of the job market if employers reduce hiring."

Proposition A also includes a mandate for employers to provide paid sick leave, which the Chamber argues conflicts with federal law and could lead to frivolous lawsuits against employers.

At the Missouri Chamber, there is a belief that employers should have autonomy over their time-off policies and be able to tailor these requirements according to their workforce's specific needs.

"Missouri employers know their employees are their greatest asset and recognize the importance of offering competitive wages and benefits," Corches stated. "However, the Missouri Chamber will always oppose new business mandates. We believe business owners know best how to run their own companies, and the government should stay out of the way. Our position is simple: Let business decide."
