Today, Mayor Tishaura O. Jones was joined by Ald. Anne Schweitzer and other members of the Board of Aldermen as she signed BB 51, modernizing the City's Complete Streets policies.

"Streets in St. Louis should be welcoming to everyone, no matter how they choose to get around," said Mayor Jones. "So when we upgrade our transportation infrastructure, we have to make sure that the designs are people-friendly. Updating our Complete Streets legislation helps us achieve that goal."

BB 51, sponsored by Ald. Schweitzer, improves the City's Complete Streets policy and invites the public to be part of the process. With the signing of this bill, the Complete Streets Advisory Committee—which will include relevant City departments, a citizen representative, Bi-State Development and the Missouri Department of Transportation—will meet quarterly. The bill also ensures that those meetings will be open to the public and allow for public comment.

"While it was sometimes as bumpy as Broadway, passing this legislation proves that we can have hard conversations about where we are at and where we want to go. And that we are willing to have those conversations not just in public, but with the public fully engaged," said Ald. Schweitzer.

Complete Streets is one important part of the City's efforts to make streets, sidewalks and surrounding infrastructure more people-friendly. The City is currently developing its first citywide Transportation & Mobility Plan in decades, which will result in short- and long-term projects and create new priorities for a safer, better-maintained transportation network across the city.

Transportation infrastructure projects totaling more than $300 million will be built in St. Louis between 2024 and 2027. Those projects include redesigning more than 30 miles of arterial streets, improving safety at hotspot intersections, and building miles of new pedestrian and bike trails.
