University of Missouri officials have announced the appointment of Laird Veatch as the new director of athletics for Mizzou, effective May 1, 2024. Veatch, who currently serves as the director of athletics at the University of Memphis, has been praised for his leadership skills and vision.

University of Missouri President Mun Choi expressed confidence in Veatch, stating, “AD Veatch is a proven leader with the vision we need to achieve our championship goals.” The search committee, led by Bob Blitz, curator and chair of the search committee, was dedicated to finding the best fit for Mizzou, and Blitz believes Veatch will accelerate the university's path to success in SEC athletics.

Veatch, a former football student-athlete at Kansas State University, brings 25 years of experience in intercollegiate athletics, with a background in the Big 12 and Southeastern Conference. During his tenure at Memphis, Veatch oversaw various facility projects and led innovative programs, including the Name, Image and Likeness initiative.

Board Chair Robin Wenneker expressed excitement about Veatch's appointment, stating, "Laird is the right person to lead athletics to the highest standard of excellence we expect at the University of Missouri." Veatch's return to Mizzou comes at a time of success for Mizzou Athletics, with achievements in both athletics and academics in recent years.

In his own words, Veatch shared his enthusiasm for the new role, saying, “I am honored and humbled to serve the university and to do my part to elevate Mizzou Athletics to unprecedented heights.” His previous experience at Mizzou and in the SEC has prepared him well for this new challenge.

Greg Sankey, commissioner of the SEC, welcomed Veatch back to the conference, highlighting his energy and leadership skills. Veatch's familiarity with the Mizzou community, having previously worked at the university from 1997-2002, adds to his qualifications for the position.

Veatch and his family are looking forward to this new chapter at the University of Missouri. The UM Board of Curators is set to meet to approve the contract, with an introductory press conference scheduled for later this week to provide more details on Veatch's plans for Mizzou Athletics.
