Over 150 Airmen and three B-2 Spirits from Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri, arrived at Keflavik Air Base, Iceland, on August 13, 2023, to engage in Bomber Task Force missions as part of U.S. European Command’s collaborative training efforts with allies, partners, and U.S. joint forces.

Gen. James Hecker, commander of U.S. Air Forces in Europe and U.S. Air Forces Africa and NATO Allied Command, emphasized the importance of these missions, stating that they underscore the prowess of the armed forces in navigating global security terrain and fostering stability, security, and freedom across Europe. He further highlighted the commitment of the U.S. to collaborate with allies and partners to maintain peace and stability in the region.

Leading the expeditionary bomber crew is Lt. Col. Andrew Kousgaard, commander of the 393rd Bomb Squadron, who emphasized the significance of dynamic force employment and the flexibility of the B-2 bomber in strategic deployments. Kousgaard stressed the value of hands-on integration with allies during deployments like this, stating that there is no substitute for such collaborative training exercises.

The deployment of the B-2 Spirits to Keflavik Air Base not only facilitates collaborative training but also strengthens interoperability and demonstrates the unwavering dedication of the United States to the region. The Bomber Task Force missions provide strategic options for U.S. and NATO leaders to assure, deter, and defend against adversary aggression in Europe and globally.

In addition to enhancing combat readiness, the BTF initiative allows Airmen to engage in a wide spectrum of military operations, ranging from combat missions to humanitarian aid and disaster relief efforts. Regular and routine deployments of U.S. strategic bombers alongside allies and partners bolster the collective response to potential global conflicts.
