JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey has initiated an investigation into the Hazelwood School District following a disturbing incident where a student was assaulted during school hours. Attorney General Bailey expressed his concerns, stating, “I am launching an investigation into Hazelwood School District after a student was senselessly assaulted by another student in broad daylight.”

The focus of the investigation will be on the school district's diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs and how they may have contributed to the unfortunate incident. Attorney General Bailey emphasized the importance of accountability, declaring, “The entire community deserves answers on how Hazelwood’s radical DEI programs resulted in such despicable safety failures that has resulted in a student fighting for her life. There must be accountability.”

In a detailed statement, Attorney General Bailey highlighted his unease with the school district's approach, noting, “I am disturbed that it appears Hazelwood School District (‘HSD’) has ignored long-standing Missouri law and elevated political narrative above student safety.” He pointed out specific actions taken by the district, such as removing uniformed police officers from schools, which he believes have compromised student safety.

Referring to the Missouri Human Rights Act, Attorney General Bailey underscored the importance of ensuring that every Missouri resident is free from discrimination and can enjoy places of public accommodation without fear of harm. He emphasized the role of his office in enforcing these rights, particularly in cases like the one involving Hazelwood School District.

The investigation comes in the wake of a recent incident on March 11, 2024, where a student from Hazelwood East High School, Kaylee Gain, was viciously assaulted near school property. Ms. Gain is currently in critical condition in a St. Louis area hospital, prompting serious questions about the adequacy of safety measures in the school district.

As the investigation unfolds, Attorney General Bailey remains steadfast in his commitment to upholding the rights and safety of all individuals within the state of Missouri.
