In a recent announcement, the University of Missouri unveiled the recipients of the 2024 Kemper Fellowship for Teaching Excellence. Five exceptional educators have been selected for this prestigious award, which includes a $15,000 stipend. Over the coming days, university officials along with representatives from Commerce Bank will be surprising the deserving honorees.
Established in 1991 through a generous donation, the William T. Kemper Fellowships for Teaching Excellence honor the legacy of William T. Kemper, a distinguished alumnus of the university and a respected civic leader. The trust fund supporting these fellowships is managed by Commerce Bank.
Among the esteemed recipients is Nicole Campione-Barr, a professor of psychological sciences in the College of Arts and Science. Known for her dedication to inspiring students, Campione-Barr emphasizes the importance of mentorship and independence in the learning process. She expressed, "Early in the development of a new skill, individuals seek a warm and supportive mentor or model to aid and scaffold their learning." She further added, "With increasing competence and maturity in the skill, however, individuals must be allowed to gain increasing autonomy from their mentors in order to achieve independent success."
Campione-Barr also highlights the broader impact of understanding child development, stating, "Adults who are more knowledgeable about child development are more confident and competent parents, teachers, and mentors." Her commitment to empowering students both academically and personally has made her a deserving recipient of the Kemper Fellowship for Teaching Excellence.
The recognition of these exceptional educators not only celebrates their individual achievements but also underscores the university's commitment to fostering excellence in teaching and learning.
