The Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry has taken a stand against proposed legislation in the state that aims to penalize private businesses for implementing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies. The organization's opposition comes in response to SB 980, which was discussed in the Senate Government Accountability Committee this week.

During the hearing, Phillip Arnzen, director of legislative affairs for the Missouri Chamber, expressed concerns about the potential consequences of the bill. Arnzen stated, "The DEI-related prohibitions in this legislation put businesses at a higher risk for litigation and would be an additional liability for private entities. These restrictions would limit which businesses might want to come to Missouri and do business in the state."

In addition to the restrictions related to DEI policies, the bill also includes a provision that prohibits contracts involving economic boycotts. Arnzen pointed out that this provision could result in new mandates for businesses and unintended costs associated with changes to procurement procedures.

The Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry is urging stakeholders to consider the implications of SB 980 on the business environment in the state. For further inquiries or information, individuals are encouraged to reach out to Phillip Arnzen at parnzen@mochamber.com or by calling 573-654-3511.
