Senior residents in St. Louis now have the opportunity to apply for a property tax freeze credit, aimed at providing financial relief to those facing the burden of rising property taxes. The credit, enacted by BB 141 (Schweitzer), is designed to protect senior citizens from being displaced due to escalating property values resulting from community and economic development efforts.
Mayor Tishaura O. Jones expressed her support for the initiative, stating, "This property tax freeze is meant to protect senior St. Louis residents from being displaced due to rising property values as a result of community and economic development. I encourage qualifying seniors to apply so they can take part in the economic development of our city without the risk of being priced out of their homes."
The new credit allows the City to offer fixed property tax rates to senior citizens each year, enabling eligible individuals to better manage their limited financial resources. Applicants must be aged 62 and above, live in St. Louis, and have earned at least forty Social Security credits. They must also meet specific property ownership criteria, including residing in a homestead valued at $500,000 or less, using the property as their primary residence, and being responsible for property taxes.
Eligible seniors can apply for the tax credit through the City of St. Louis Assessor's office via online submission, paper form, or in-person visits before the annual June 30 deadline. It is important to note that this tax credit does not extend to commercial or investment properties, or properties currently benefiting from tax abatement.
To learn more about the application process and eligibility requirements, interested individuals are encouraged to visit the St. Louis City Assessor's website or contact the office directly at (314) 622-4050.
