Missouri Dept. of Conservation - Missouri’s White Oaks

GET TO KNOW WHAT WE GROW: The George O. White State Forest Nursery grows one of the most ecologically significant tree species in the Eastern United States: white oak. These magnificent trees provide food and shelter to countless animals, birds, insects, and spiders.

Missouri’s white oaks are a critical part of the state’s $10 billion timber industry that produces lumber and barrels used all over the world. The ability to grow white oak all starts with the seed. The nursery plants between 6,000 and 7,000 pounds of white oak acorns every year. This seed is purchased from Missouri citizens at the nursery or at our buying stations at MDC offices in Kirksville, Chillicothe, and St. Joseph.
