Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) said Antifa members went to his Washington, D.C., home and threatened his wife and newborn daughter while he was in Missouri.
“Tonight while I was in Missouri, Antifa scumbags came to our place in DC and threatened my wife and newborn daughter, who can’t travel,” Hawley tweeted of the incident. “They screamed threats, vandalized, and tried to pound open our door. Let me be clear: My family & I will not be intimidated by leftwing violence”
Several supporters offered prayers and sentiments. Others said he exaggerated the incident, claiming it was a peaceful protest and not an out-of-hand event.
“I am praying for your family’s safety!” one user replied.
Another said they did not agree with showing up at an elected official’s home to protest.
One user said regardless of whether any violence occurred in this incident, there have been other protests where protesters have been violent.
“There is such an irony to people claiming to be “anti-fascist” while using intimidation and violence against others who don’t agree with everything they say,” the user replied.
Another user was baffled that protesters would protest at the home of an official.
“Why at his home? That is totally wrong, how anyone can say that is a peaceful protest, it’s not!!!” the user said.
One user defended Hawley, saying that while he may have exaggerated, it was not right that a group of people showed up at his home. The user said he understood Hawley’s concern, as he would feel concern if it was his own wife and children.
Hawley announced publicly last week that he would be objecting to the Electoral College votes during the Jan. 6 count during the joint session with the House and the Senate to officially count the votes and elect the president.
