A St. Louis County man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for murder and related charges. U.S. District Judge Matthew T. Schelp handed down the sentence on Wednesday to Terry W. Winebarger, 52, who was found guilty of fatally shooting an acquaintance.

The incident occurred on February 18, 2023, in Hanley Hills, Missouri. Winebarger shot the victim with a 10mm Glock handgun belonging to the victim. Following the murder, he stole the firearm, jewelry, and methamphetamine that the victim had recently acquired.

After committing the crime, Winebarger attempted to eliminate evidence by purchasing new clothes, disinfectant wipes, and bleach before returning home.

In July, Winebarger pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in St. Louis to several charges: possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, discharge of a firearm during a drug-trafficking crime resulting in death, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The investigation involved multiple law enforcement agencies including the Drug Enforcement Administration, St. Louis County Police Department, Major Case Squad, North County Police Cooperative with assistance from St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department and St. Charles County Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lisa Epplin.
