ST. LOUIS – St. Louis CITY SC released a new study today detailing the economic impact of the team on the St. Louis metro area, amounting to nearly $170 million during its inaugural season in 2023. Kurt Weigle, Chief Downtown Officer for Greater St. Louis, Inc., issued a statement regarding the economic impact study, which was commissioned by GSL in partnership with CITY SC.
“It was clear from the moment the team was first announced that CITY SC has added energy and enthusiasm to and strengthened civic pride in our metro. This study shows that they have also had a dramatic economic impact on Downtown St. Louis and the entire regional economy,” Weigle said.
“The success of not only the players on the pitch but also the team in the broader community is a testament to the commitment to St. Louis of Carolyn Kindle, Andy Taylor, the Taylor Family, and the entire CITY ownership team. And it shows how civic leadership can drive growth and build lasting momentum St. Louis needs to win this decade,” he added.
The study, conducted by independent planning firm PGAV based in St. Louis and commissioned by CITY SC and Greater St. Louis, Inc., found that CITY SC generated more than $168 million in economic impact for the region during its 2023 season.
Additional findings include:
– The construction of CITYPARK and its 32-acre campus created an additional $1.4 billion in economic impact since 2020.
– The direct cost of the privately-owned stadium campus—which includes the stadium, team training facility and practice fields, team store, parking garage, and corporate headquarters—was $667 million.
– The overall impact includes approximately $122 million in incremental tax revenue: $33 million in local and state tax revenue; $15 million in infrastructure upgrades to lighting, sidewalks, bike paths, and streets in surrounding areas.
