Sporting Kansas City head coach Raphael Wicky said on Apr. 18 that he saw positives in his team’s performance despite a defeat against Vancouver. Wicky addressed the media after the match, highlighting the efforts of a young squad facing one of the league’s top teams.

The significance of this game lies in Sporting Kansas City’s ongoing process of rebuilding with younger players, many of whom are gaining their first Major League Soccer experience. The team is also contending with injuries and frequent changes to its lineup.

Wicky said, “Of course the first half didn’t go the way I wanted. But overall, I have to say. I can take positives from this performance. I told this to the players.” He explained that several players were making their first starts or minutes in MLS and emphasized that despite conceding three goals early, “I didn’t see a team giving up. I saw a team who kept working.” Regarding individual performances, Wicky praised Kwaku Agyabeng: “Kwaku has convinced us since the first week of preseason in any aspect… He’s a player who is not scared. He doesn’t show fear… So I believe that he is a very bright player for this club for the future.” On Cielo Tschantret and Capita Capemba, Wicky noted both had challenges but showed character and potential for growth.

Midfielder Manu Garcia also shared his thoughts on the match: “It’s a 3-0 loss. So it’s difficult to take positives from it… At least today we can see something to work with and some positive to take.” Garcia discussed overcoming recent setbacks and supporting younger teammates as they adapt: “I’m trying to help them… When results are not going well, when things are not going well, I’m trying to make them feel confident.” He added praise for Agyabeng’s development: “I talk a lot with Kwaku today. I think there are big things coming from him… He just needs time like some of the guys.”

Both Wicky and Garcia acknowledged ongoing challenges related to injuries and integrating new talent into Sporting Kansas City’s roster but expressed confidence in long-term improvement as younger players gain experience.

Looking ahead, Wicky reiterated his belief in building towards better results: “I believe 100% that we will get there where we want and we will go to the right direction,” emphasizing continued focus on developing young talent within the club.
