U.S. Senators Josh Hawley and Richard Blumenthal convened a hearing to discuss the cybersecurity threats posed by China and the impact of American technology companies’ reliance on supply chains based in China. The hearing was held under the auspices of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology, and the Law, where Hawley serves as Ranking Member and Blumenthal as Chair.
During the session, Senator Hawley engaged with several experts in cybersecurity. Among those providing testimony were Adam Meyers from CrowdStrike, Sam Bresnick from Georgetown’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology, and Isaac Stone Fish of Strategy Risks. The discussion focused on China’s influence on American security interests, employment within the United States, and Taiwan’s sovereignty.
Senator Hawley emphasized his concerns about China’s position as a formidable competitor. “I hope it is a wake up call for our entire government, our entire country that we face with China a peer competitor of a kind we frankly haven’t seen in any of our lifetimes,” he stated. He criticized American corporations for prioritizing profits over national security by outsourcing jobs to China. “If there’s ever an advertisement for bringing our critical supply chains home…this is it.”
Hawley also highlighted the urgency of protecting vital industries from Chinese influence and espionage efforts both globally and domestically. “The time is upon us now to make sure that we safeguard these critical industries,” he urged.
