U.S. Senator Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.) criticized Democrats on Mar. 25 for what he described as holding Department of Homeland Security funding hostage to advance a policy agenda that affects the operations of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents.

The issue is significant because it impacts federal law enforcement agencies’ ability to operate fully, with TSA agents reportedly missing paychecks due to the ongoing funding dispute. The debate reflects broader disagreements in Congress over border security and immigration enforcement.

During an interview on Fox News’ Hannity, Schmitt said, “We’re not doing anything to kneecap ICE’s ability to do their jobs and deport the people who’ve come here illegally. The only reason the Democrats want to unmask ICE agents is they want facial recognition software to identify these ICE agents and harass their families, so nobody wants to be an ICE agent.” He continued by comparing current efforts against ICE with previous calls for police defunding: “Again, we lived through this with the defund the police movement Sean, where you saw a drop in people who want to be police officers. You saw early retirements. We’re not doing that again.”

Schmitt also addressed TSA agent pay during the interview: “We’ve done it five times. We’ll vote on again this week. Sean, they ought to go to work… These folks are going without their third paycheck… Most people in real life. They can’t do that, and the Democrats did this to them just a few months ago.”

According to the official website, Schmitt engages Missouri youth through programs like the Senator’s Youth Council aimed at promoting civic engagement and leadership according to his office. He comes from a sixth-generation Missouri family of farmers, teachers, and small business owners according to his office. As vice chairman of the Joint Economic Committee and member of other Senate committees including Judiciary and Armed Services according to his office, Schmitt prioritizes protecting free speech as well as supporting families with special needs—a cause inspired by personal experiences within his own family according to his office.

Schmitt concluded by reiterating opposition against any move he believes would weaken immigration enforcement or reduce support for federal law enforcement agencies: “But if you actually get rid of all the enforcement mechanisms and the people who want to do that job, then they would get it, and we’re not giving in on that.”

The ongoing dispute highlights deep divisions in Congress regarding border policy while raising concerns about government shutdowns affecting essential workers.
