Scale AI has announced plans to open a new artificial intelligence center in St. Louis’ historic Post Building, marking an expansion of its operations within the city’s growing geospatial and defense technology sector.

The company said the new facility will support the U.S. Government’s geospatial data needs and strengthen St. Louis’ position as a national hub for these industries. Scale AI first established its presence in St. Louis four years ago to work closely with government partners and build expertise in geospatial AI.

“The Post Building provides the ideal environment for the next chapter of our growth in St. Louis,” said AJ Segal, Head of the St. Louis AI Center at Scale AI. “We came to St. Louis four years ago to be close to our government partners and build the nation’s premier team for geospatial AI. This new space will allow us to continue investing in our 250-person team and the entire local ecosystem. We are proud to be a catalyst for innovation in Downtown North and are committed to making St. Louis the undisputed best place in the world to cultivate the talent that is so critical to our national security.”

The relocation is part of broader development efforts by StarWood Group, which owns both The Post Building and The Globe Building, key sites supporting St. Louis’ geospatial industry growth in Downtown North.

“This agreement underscores St. Louis’ role as a defense tech hub and a national leader in geospatial artificial intelligence. Moving Scale AI into The Post Building will also help revitalize downtown St. Louis and open meaningful career opportunities in a cutting-edge industry. I was proud to support previous initiatives by Scale AI and appreciate their continued commitment to making St. Louis a cornerstone of their defense and geospatial innovation ecosystem,” said U.S. Senator Eric Schmitt.

Scale AI is expected to occupy about 8% of The Post Building, using advanced facilities designed for collaboration and connectivity, with plans to welcome employees starting in October.

“St. Louis is cementing its role as a national leader in geospatial intelligence, and Scale AI is at the forefront of that movement,” said U.S. Representative Wesley Bell (MO-01). “This expansion into the Post Building is more than just a new office—it’s a major investment in our local workforce. I commend Scale for its deep commitment to our community and for proving that the technology of the future can and should be built right here in the heartland.”

The company has become an important employer locally, offering job opportunities even for those without prior experience in artificial intelligence or geospatial science.

“Scale AI has continued to grow its presence in St. Louis and it’s a powerful example of the inclusive growth we are building in our city,” said St. Louis Mayor Cara Spencer. “By planting its flag in the historic Post Building, Scale is not only helping to revitalize our downtown core but is also creating the accessible technology careers that will power our economy for years to come. We are proud to have them as a partner in building a more vibrant and prosperous future for all St. Louisans.”

Dustin Allison, Interim CEO of Greater St. Louis, Inc., which leads regional efforts through its GeoFutures Initiative, described this move as strengthening multiple sectors: “This is not just about jobs, but also about strengthening our geospatial, AI, and defense tech sectors. This new center and the continued development of Downtown North position St. Louis for growth on all fronts.”
