Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson announced on April 28 that two people have been charged following a shooting at a smoke shop in Kansas City’s northeast neighborhood over the weekend.

The incident resulted in one person being injured. The prosecutor’s office said Ashley Mack and Mia Shaw each face one count of Unlawful Use of a Weapon, one count of Armed Criminal Action, and Second Degree Burglary.

According to court records, Kansas City police responded to the shooting on April 25. Surveillance footage from the store reportedly shows Mack and Shaw entering the business and yelling at an employee. As the employee tried to remove them from the store, both attempted to strike him with their hands and fists. The employee pushed them out of the store, after which Mack gestured what appeared to be a firearm toward him as he backed up inside. The employee then pulled out his own firearm and fired multiple shots, hitting Mack. Shaw allegedly shot into the store while witnesses were present, prompting more gunfire from inside.

Shaw transported Mack to a local hospital where she is now reported to be in stable condition. Authorities said that on April 24—the day before the shooting—Mack and Shaw’s brother had entered the same store threatening staff; all three had previously been banned from entering before this incident occurred.

A Jackson County judge set bond for each defendant at $75,000 with a ten percent option. “Charges are only accusations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until the defendants are either found guilty or plead guilty,” Johnson said.
