Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson announced on May 1 that a Kansas City man has been charged in connection with a fatal shooting outside a convenience store last weekend.

The case involves Jquan Styles-Olden, who faces charges of second-degree murder and armed criminal action. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about violent crime in the area and the response of law enforcement and prosecutors to such events.

According to court records, police responded to reports of a shooting on April 24 outside a convenience store, where they found a male victim inside a red Chevrolet Silverado suffering from gunshot wounds. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Surveillance footage reportedly showed a red Pontiac arriving at the parking lot, with its driver—later identified as Styles-Olden—entering the store to make a purchase. While he was inside, the victim parked near the entrance. As Styles-Olden left the store, he walked past the back of the Chevrolet Silverado, then pulled out a firearm and fired into the vehicle before fleeing on foot.

A Jackson County judge set bond for Styles-Olden at $250,000 cash only.

“Charges are only accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until the defendant is either found guilty or pleads guilty,” said Johnson.

The next steps in this case will be determined as it proceeds through court. Observers will be watching closely as it moves forward.
