The Missouri Bar announced on May 5 that nominations are now open for the 2026-2027 Leadership Academy class, inviting members to nominate young or newly admitted lawyers who have demonstrated leadership in their communities.

The program aims to foster professional growth and encourage diversity among the bar’s future leaders. The Missouri Bar serves as the integrated professional association for all practicing attorneys in Missouri, according to the official website. Each year, about a dozen lawyers under age 40 or within ten years of bar admission are selected for networking and leadership development opportunities.

Those interested can submit nominations online by May 31. After this period, nominees will receive an application form, which a selection committee will review before choosing the next class. The academy has graduated more than 290 participants over its more than 25-year history. “One of the biggest lessons I took from Leadership Academy was how much growth can happen when you’re in a space with other thoughtful, motivated leaders who are all willing to show up fully,” said Brittany Chapman, a member of the 2024-2025 Leadership Academy class.

Leadership Academy members participate in annual meetings and workshops designed to develop leadership skills and create public service projects. At year’s end, they commit to serving actively within The Missouri Bar for two additional years. Many alumni have served on committees and as presenters at major conferences such as MOSOLO Small Firm Conference and Bernard Edelman DWI Law & Science Seminar.

Participants benefit from networking opportunities at The Bar Center, which includes conference rooms used for member functions according to the official website. “I wanted to intentionally develop my leadership skills, connect with other driven and service-oriented lawyers across the state, and contribute meaningfully to The Missouri Bar,” said Des’Aire Taylor of the upcoming academy class.

The Missouri Bar operates under a Board of Governors made up of elected attorneys representing districts across Missouri according to its official website. It contributes legal information resources that bolster both legal professionals and communities throughout Missouri while promoting fair practices in justice according to its official website.
