The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-4 after rookie left fielder Nathan Church made a leaping catch at the wall to rob Nick Gonzales of a walk-off home run on April 30.

Church’s defensive play marked his third home run robbery of the season and ended the game in favor of the Cardinals. The play came as Gonzales swung at the first pitch, leaving both teams’ players and staff uncertain about the outcome until Church secured the final out.

“Initially off the bat, I thought it was gone,” Riley O’Brien said. Manager Oliver Marmol agreed, saying, “Off the bat, I thought it was — not just a homer — I thought it was way gone.” Starting pitcher Andre Pallante watched from inside and said simply, “Popped him up. Fly ball to left. Everything to left field is an out. We love having Church out there.” O’Brien added after the game: “I said, ‘I love you. Thank you for catching that.’”

Earlier in the game, rookie JJ Wetherholt drove in Ramon Urías with an RBI double in the third inning and Alec Burleson hit an opposite-field home run estimated at 411 feet during the fifth inning. The Cardinals’ coaching staff prepares outfielders like Church for wall plays before each series through drills led by Jon Jay.

“That was some of the work that we did right when we got here,” Church said about his preparation for difficult catches near stadium walls.

Pitcher Pallante threw six innings allowing only one run before relievers Ryne Stanek and JoJo Romero handled late-inning threats from Pittsburgh hitters such as Marcell Ozuna. Manager Marmol commented on Romero’s performance: “That’s a tough spot to bring somebody into… JoJo has two pitches… you’re just betting on [him] executing on it — and he did a really nice job.” George Soriano also pitched under pressure but maintained St. Louis’ lead despite defensive errors behind him.

Marmol praised Soriano’s composure: “The more you watch him, he’s really steady in his mentality… His preparation is highly impressive… It allows him to feel prepared and just play when he’s out there.”
