The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team split a doubleheader against the University of Indianapolis on April 18 at Bill Bright Field in Indianapolis. The Greyhounds won the first game 3-0, while the Tritons claimed a close victory in the second game, finishing 9-8.

The results leave UMSL with a record of 22-18 overall and 16-7 in conference play, while UIndy stands at 24-17 overall and 15-8 in conference games.

In the second game, Indianapolis scored first but UMSL responded quickly. Bennett Cagle hit a three-run home run to left field, followed by an RBI single from Mitch Bonczkowski to give the Tritons an early lead. Additional runs came from sacrifice flies by Justin Terhaar and Owen Faith in the fourth inning. Although Joey Humphrey hit a three-run home run for UIndy during their four-run fifth inning rally, UMSL extended its advantage with Bonczkowski’s two-run homer—his eighteenth of the season—and an insurance run driven in by Justin Simard.

Despite late efforts from Indianapolis—including a home run by Austin Bode and a two-run double from Brayton Bowen—the Tritons held on for victory as Garrett Brunstetter recorded his first save of the season after retiring Garrett Rusch for the final out.

In game one, UIndy took control early with runs scored on walks and bunts as well as Rusch’s solo home run. Pitcher Ayden Tran limited UMSL to just four hits over seven innings while striking out nine batters.

UMSL is scheduled to conclude its series against Indianapolis with another matchup set for Sunday morning.
