The Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry is throwing its weight behind legislation that would provide protection for employers hiring individuals with a criminal record. Speaking in support of the bill, Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry Director of Legislative Affairs Heidi Geisbuhler Sutherland emphasized the importance of the provision that would offer civil liability protections for employers taking a chance on ex-offenders.
The proposed bill, HB 2064, aims to create liability protections for employers who hire individuals with a criminal history, with exceptions for certain violent and sexual offenses. Notably, the legislation would render the fact that an employee was convicted of a non-violent or non-sexual offense before being hired as inadmissible in court.
Heidi Geisbuhler Sutherland highlighted the potential positive impact of the legislation, stating that it could help address the statewide workforce shortage while simultaneously reducing re-incarceration rates for individuals with a history in the criminal justice system. The Missouri Chamber’s support for this initiative is in line with their commitment to reducing recidivism and facilitating the employment of justice-involved individuals, as outlined in their 2022 public safety report, “Safer Missouri, Stronger Missouri.”
