A Jackson County jury has delivered a complete defense verdict in favor of the Missouri Department of Corrections, following an employment discrimination lawsuit brought by a former employee. The decision, announced by Attorney General Andrew Bailey, means the state will not face nearly eight figures in potential liability.

“This verdict sends a clear message: we will not allow meritless claims to disrupt the operations of our state agencies or burden the taxpayers of Missouri,” said Attorney General Andrew Bailey. “When the State of Missouri is sued, our Office stands ready to defend its laws, institutions, and public servants with integrity and excellence. I couldn’t be more proud of our team for delivering this win for Missouri taxpayers.”

The plaintiff had alleged multiple counts of unlawful discrimination, including denial of promotions, disparate treatment, and wrongful termination in retaliation for prior complaints. However, after a multi-day trial and deliberation, the jury unanimously rejected all claims.

According to the Attorney General’s Office, their Employment Law Section demonstrated that the allegations were unsupported by facts and contradicted by credible testimony and evidence.

The plaintiff sought damages approaching eight figures. The verdict spares Missouri from what could have been millions in payouts and legal exposure.

“This result is a testament to the exceptional talent and dedication of the civil defense attorneys in our Employment Law Section,” added Attorney General Bailey.

Officials say that this outcome preserves both the reputation of the Department of Corrections and state employment practices while protecting taxpayer funds.
