The Kansas City Chiefs began their voluntary offseason training program at the team facility on April 20, marking the start of “Phase 1” for players and coaches ahead of the upcoming football season.
This phase is important because it allows players to return to in-person meetings, strength training, conditioning, and physical rehabilitation after a period of virtual sessions in recent years. The first part of the program will last two weeks before on-field work begins in mid-May.
Head Coach Andy Reid said, “We’re fired up to get the guys back in the building. We had a nice turnout today, which I appreciate. This is a time when the players can meet with their coaches and lift weights. There’re no coaches on the field, but the [players] can go out and throw – the receivers and quarterbacks.”
Reid also addressed quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ recovery from a knee injury that ended his previous season. “He goes to meetings and he can lift – all of that,” Reid said. “That’s the phase he’s in right now. We’ll just see and play it by ear [in regard to next steps]. He’s doing great, but we have to be smart with this thing.”
The beginning of offseason activities comes as excitement builds for Thursday’s NFL Draft. Reid reflected on his role during this busy time: “I enjoy doing what I’m doing. I feel very privileged and honored to be able to do it,” he said. “I’m around good people, I love the new additions – whether it’s coaches or players – and now we get to bring in some more guys.” The NFL Draft is scheduled for Thursday night at 7 pm Central Time.
