Filmmaker James Gunn will return to Saint Louis University on May 16 to deliver the commencement address for the university’s spring ceremony, according to an April 9 announcement. Gunn, a graduate of SLU in 1992, is known for directing films such as “Superman” (2025) and the “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise, as well as creating the Emmy-nominated television series “Peacemaker.”

The selection of Gunn highlights his achievements in film and his ongoing leadership at DC Studios. As co-chairman and chief executive officer of DC Studios, he is overseeing new projects centered on DC’s characters. His work has been recognized for bringing lesser-known comic book figures into prominence while exploring themes like belonging and redemption.

Saint Louis University President Edward Feser said, “James Gunn’s work reflects the power of imagination and perseverance, applied to both individual creative endeavors and the work of leadership. His story is a compelling example for our graduates as they leave SLU to make their own impact on the world.” Gunn credited his time at SLU with helping him discover his passion: “Saint Louis University is where I first discovered my voice as a storyteller and realized what I wanted to do in life,” he said. “Being invited to return as commencement speaker is a full-circle moment, and I’m grateful to celebrate with the graduates and their families.”

Gunn began making films at age 12 in St. Louis before gaining international recognition with movies that have grossed billions worldwide. He recently wrote and directed “Superman,” which earned over $618 million globally; he is currently developing its sequel slated for release in 2027.

During this year’s ceremony, honorary degrees will also be conferred upon trustee emeritus J. Joe Adorjan; Judge Henry Autrey; and Sr. Mary Haddad for their contributions across business, law, medicine, and arts.

Founded in 1818, Saint Louis University supports community engagement through service programs addressing social needs according to its official website.
