Saint Louis University recognized five women for their contributions to the university community during the 49th annual Mary A. Bruemmer Recognition ceremony, held on April 7. The event, organized by SLU’s Women’s Commission, celebrates individuals who demonstrate service and commitment to the university and its values.
The awards are named after Mary Bruemmer, the inaugural honoree in 1977. Each year, administrators, faculty, staff, and students are selected for their professional achievements and dedication to others. Associate Provost Lisa Dorsey said, “Our recipients reflect not only professional achievement, but also a deep commitment to others. They model sensitivity to difference, generosity of spirit, and what it truly means to be a person for others in the Ignatian tradition.”
The honorees for 2026 include Esmeralda Aharon (program director of Faculty, Staff, and Community Engagement at the School of Medicine), Susanne Chawszczewski (director of Campus Ministry), Peggy Dotson (assistant provost for academic success), Grace LoPiccolo (undergraduate student in the College of Arts and Sciences), and April Trees (associate provost for graduate education). The selection is based on alignment with Saint Louis University’s philosophy through quality service work ethic and integrity.
“This year’s honorees’ service reminds us why this work matters and why this community thrives,” Dorsey said.
In addition to these awards, several members were recognized as recipients of the Sister Shirley Kolmer Memorial Grant. Established in 2016 by SLU’s Women’s Commission, this grant supports projects that educate and empower women within the university community. Recipients included Darleesa Doss for her project on self-advocacy in maternal healthcare settings among Black pregnant women; Victoria Dieckman, Amelia Marsh, and Madeline Schurman received support to present their program aimed at helping academic advisors assist international students at an upcoming conference.
