Farzana Hoque, M.D., an associate professor of internal medicine and acting internship co-director at Saint Louis University School of Medicine, has been recognized as a 2024 Leader of Distinction by the YWCA Metro St. Louis.

Dr. Hoque holds multiple roles at SLU, including providing acute medical care to complex hospitalized patients and co-managing surgical specialties. She is the inaugural medical director of Bordley Tower at SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital and serves on the Faculty Senate. Additionally, she is the president of the Society of Hospital Medicine St. Louis Chapter.

Christine Jacobs, M.D., vice president for medical affairs and dean of SLU’s School of Medicine, remarked, “In her years at SLU, Dr. Hoque has directed and expanded hospital medicine services and positively impacted the students and residents she encounters.”

Dr. Hoque also mentors underrepresented undergraduate students aspiring to be physicians and volunteers with St. Louis CRUSH (Community Resources United to Stop Heroin), contributing resources in combating the heroin crisis in St. Louis.

The YWCA Metro St. Louis acknowledged Dr. Hoque’s achievements as sending “a powerful message to women of all ages and backgrounds that success is attainable.”

Among her accolades is the Society of Hospital Medicine’s Unsung Hero award for her initiatives in diversity, equity, and inclusion within her chapter. In 2021, she was the only woman on the St. Louis Chapter board and increased female representation among hospitalist board members during her presidency. She also established the SHM St. Louis Chapter’s Visionary Leadership Award to honor outstanding hospitalist leaders annually.
