Members of the St. Louis community gathered at Saint Louis University on September 10 to celebrate a new public art installation, “The Legacy of Mill Creek,” by artist Cbabi Bayoc. The artwork honors the historically Black neighborhood of Mill Creek Valley, which was demolished in the 1950s during urban renewal efforts.
The installation consists of four panels focusing on themes such as faith, business, music, and sports. Each panel’s back features a handwritten message from Bayoc detailing his inspiration for the work. “With this art, I wanted to hit on the pillars of the community,” Bayoc stated. He expressed gratitude for the acceptance of his work at SLU and noted its impact on viewers.
Bayoc’s creation was inspired by the Mill Creek Valley Commemoration Committee and commissioned by the St. Louis Arts Chamber of Commerce with support from a Regional Arts Commission grant. Former community member Malaika Horne remarked that “this is the beginning of restoring the memory” of Mill Creek Valley’s history and culture.
The art installation is situated near SLU’s fountain at Grand and Lindell Boulevards, marking a historic entrance to what was once Mill Creek Valley. Today, several university buildings occupy land that belonged to this vibrant community.
Saint Louis University President Fred P. Pestello highlighted how Mill Creek was a place where people supported each other through various life events: “We’re here this afternoon to celebrate this once thriving community and to remember all of its history through this artwork.”
