The St. Louis Cardinals announced on April 17 that they will hold their annual Cardinals Care 5K run and walk this Saturday, while the team is playing in Houston. The event will take place in downtown St. Louis, with participants finishing on Clark Street and taking a lap around the warning track inside Busch Stadium.
Proceeds from the event will benefit two organizations: the Redbird Rookies Program, which provides baseball and softball opportunities for local children, and Joe Torre’s Safe at Home Foundation, a nonprofit focused on addressing domestic violence and abuse nationwide.
Former National League Most Valuable Player, Cardinals player, and Hall of Fame manager Joe Torre will attend the event alongside Jackie Joyner-Kersee to encourage runners at both the start and finish lines. Torre has spoken about his own experiences with domestic violence as a child and his commitment to supporting others facing similar challenges.
Marybeth Johnson, manager of communications and charity events for Cardinals Care, said: “We’re thrilled to invite fans downtown for a family-friendly event to help raise funds for two worthy causes.”
A virtual participation option is available for those unable to attend in person or seeking additional training opportunities. Virtual registrants receive perks such as discounts at the team store and Cardinals Nation Restaurant through June. Registration for the virtual race is open until May 30; registration for in-person participation remains open until race day morning.
Top male and female finishers will be invited to throw out an honorary pitch at a future Cardinals game this season. The top three finishers in each age group category will receive two tickets each to a 2026 Cardinals game.
“So there are prizes involved,” Johnson said.
